Denver and the Mile High Orchestra was founded in 2000 by trumpet player, vocalist, and arranger Denver Bierman and some like-minded students at Belmont University in Nashville. So the band really is from Nashville, TN and NOT from Denver, CO. Denver has been a shining example for me of someone who chose not to put his musical gifts in some kind of churchy, religious box but has actually successfully brought real quality jazz into conservative Baptist churches and everybody loves it! This has been tremendously encouraging to me as a jazz-oriented but also ministry-oriented artist myself.
I was officially a member of the band in 2003 playing tenor sax and harmonica and recording their Good to Go album with them in that same year. The guy I replaced decided to move back to Nashville at some point and I was put on the substitute list but still frequently performed with the group on either alto or tenor saxophone.
I did take a 4-year hiatus from the group when I moved to Washington state but have been doing their Christmas and patriotic tours with them every year since 2013 when I returned to the Nashville area.
