Playing Flute on a Boyz II Men Track in 1995

Or was it 1994? One thing I remember is that I was working a contract job at Raytheon Semiconductor at the time, and I was trying to explain to the receptionist about this recording session I did for Motown Records that I was so excited about.

My friend John Loken was working for Motown and they had commissioned an album of different mixes of the song Thank You. So he got his buddy Ed Goldfarb involved and Ed called me to play some flute. Ed brought his mini Moog keyboard for the sick basslines, a drum machine, and a Hohner Pianet, as I recall. You can hear the Pianet; it sounds sort of like a Wurlitzer piano on the track.

We also had a guitar player on the session. Who was it? I’ll find out.

If you listen to the original mix of the song, the drums are actually a guy beatboxing (mouthdrums) and the bassline was sung by Michael McCary (one of the Boyz). So, a big part of the remix was replacing the beatbox. Not sure if the vocal bassline stayed in.

Ed started by tapping out the drums for the track on the drum machine (was it a Linn?). Then he fired up the Moog and overdubbed the bassline. Then he and the guitar player tracked guitar and keys simultaneously. Finally, I went into the booth and played the flute riffs.

The flute is not prominently mixed, but you can definitely hear it. It comes in about halfway through the song at approximately 2 minutes in.

I was really proud to have been involved with this. I had worked exactly 10 years prior with both John and Ed at the local theme park playing music in a band. Later, Ed Goldfarb became my first-call producer for my own music.

Looking at some YouTube comments regarding this particular remix, I see people with the opinion that this remix is better than the original.

I have the official CD version of the remix album. I am not credited but there is an R. Walters listed as composer. I think that is somebody else.

I was told the album went platinum.

This has been a nice name to drop and a very nice thing to have on my music resume.
